Job Application Form

Other than your curriculum vitae an application form is your ticket to winning that interview

Personal details

This section of the application form should contain your basic personal details such as your full name; address; telephone number and an email address. This will give the employer three different ways of contacting you. They may even ask about your nationality. It is quite straight forward

Education details

The educational details will comprise of grades; subjects taken and which establishment you studied at. You should list your educational achievements in date order from present to past, this section of the form is usually self-explanatory and should be completed honestly as education information is easy to verify.

Work experience

Usually, the work experience should be in order just like the educational details are from present to past. You would be required to list all your job descriptions for all of the jobs you have carried out since you left your most recent educational establishment. If you are asked why you left your previous employment don’t say something like I left because I could not be bothered to work there. Don’t forget you are one in a million and you need to ensure that you stand out from the other applicants without jeopardising your chances.

Some application forms only allow you a certain amount of space to fill in the relevant details such as job description and duties. Some may request the reason why you left your previous employment or why you want to leave. Try to include as much information without any mistakes as possible. If there is an additional notes section then utilise this.

Keep referring to the job specification to see what the employer is looking for and use your abilities to reflect this. Make a list of all your skills to put on the application form and turn every negative into a positive.

The end

The last part of the application form usually requests you to provide at least two references, a declaration that you have not got a criminal record, equal opportunities form and maybe, depending on the position you are going for, a medical questionnaire. Be honest and ensure you sign and date the form before you send it off.

Read through the application form when completed checking for spelling errors and other mistakes. If you need to correct a mistake, correct them as neatly as possible. Photocopy the form and keep for your own records and send the form in on time.
